What is Kitchen Botanist?

Mini botany kits which aim to help the recipient to build confidence in growing indoor plants. They should also end up with two decorative plants, two edible plants and extra plants of their choice (for extra credit!).

Why am I working on this?

Having worked on tech start-ups for about a decade, I’ve discovered that the rewarding aspects of botany are really not dissimilar to those of creating your own profits from a product that started as nothing.

It’s just fascinating to me that you can create actual food, and attractive things to make your living space much nicer, out of little more than soil, seeds, sun and water.

Plus, it turns out there are a lot of really crucial aspects of botany which are still not understood (so scope for discovery) and really, really interesting facts which I would never have imagined - for instance part of a form of fern reproduction involves something that actually crawls!

So: rewarding; scope for discovery and innovation; and interesting facts to come across - it ticks many of the same boxes for me that tech ticks… plus Elon Musk’s brother Kimbal is working it ;) … and it could ultimately be crucially important to our survival as a species!

What’s in the kits?

  • Peat pods which you will use to get your seeds started;
  • A pre-grown tillandsia - which is a really great little plant which does not grow in soil, so you can display it on shells or logs or wherever you’d like really;
  • Soil for one of the plants when they mature;
  • Decorative cover for one of the plants when they mature, to make your output attractive;
  • Seeds;
  • Simple growing instructions;
  • Less simple mini botany course (which encourages experimentation not as actual science, but just for fun!).

Q&A

What’s the price?

Heavily reduced price of £12.50 for CodeBase residents, to go towards costs.

How do I order my kit?

Ping me a message at nicola@kitchenbotanist.com

How do I receive my kit?

You can either pick it up from me in CodeBase on 21st December (or I can drop it off to you - because it’s always good to visit new offices and meet new people) or have a chat with me if you would like to make other arrangements.

Why is soil and decorative cover only provided for one of the plants when they mature?

One of my challenges has been to design a kit which will fit through letterboxes, because I don’t want customers to have to wait in to receive them.

The kits will contain everything you need in order to get your plants started, a pre-grown plant which does not need soil, and soil and decorative cover (shown in picture) for one of your mature plants.

Individual boxes for soil and decorative covers will be available too, for anyone who needs/ wants them. Some people might want to get their long-term pots from elsewhere, others might not.

Extra info:

Please treat this as a very early stage project as I am still figuring out suppliers, logistics and content.

Not for you if…

…what you’re looking for is ready-grown plants (although there will be one!).
